Siyavula is very excited to have the sign up page for the Life Sciences textbook creation weekend open! Please visit http://siyavula-lifesci14-16october.eventbrite.com/ which provides further information on this event, as well as the registration page for this exciting collaboration!

We are calling on all Life Sciences educators, post-grad students and researchers that believe that educational resources should be freely and openly available for all to use, adapt and share, to join us in making this a reality for Life Sciences, starting with Grade 10.

If you have teaching notes, worksheets, exercises, powerpoint presentations, practicals and experiments – anything that is used in teaching Life Sciences and is suitable for Grade 10, then please join us for the weekend at our office in Cape Town. In addition to the teaching notes that will be combined to form the book (using an agreed upon framework), Mindset Learn, the local educational broadcaster, is also participating by openly contributing revision material and a selection of their video lessons. These videos, along with simulations, presentations and assessment items will be linked into the book to make it easier for learners and educators to find additional support. This will be in addition to free and open content that we will source online, such as videos from the Khan Academy and PhET Simulations. All catering will be provided, and it promises to be a fun and productive weekend, which will result in the first draft of the textbook. Siyavula will make the book freely available for all to access online via the educational website Connexions, as well as through our mobile front-end: http://m.siyavula.cnx.org/

We look forward to this exciting new collaboration, and making Life Sciences resources freely and openly available for all!

For further information on the weekend, please read our Q and A blog, as well as look at our process diagram of how the book will be created. Also, our final information evening event is being held on Tuesday 27 September – please sign up here if you would like to attend: http://siyavula-lifesci27sept.eventbrite.com/
